Virtual Dyno Pro Copyright 1992 - 2001 by Jem Miller
What is it?
Virtual Dyno is a personal dyno software package that runs on any IBM compatible computer with at least 18 meg of free hard drive space, and 8 meg of free memory. It requires Windows 95, 98, ME, or NT to operate, and is fully compatible with networked systems.
With VDPro you can play "what if" with your engine or chassis setup without buying the parts first. VDPro is designed to produce as close to "real world" results as possible, but it is also designed to be pessimistic in the numbers that it produces. That means that things like 1/4 mile times should be realistic enough to be achieved by an experienced driver familiar with the car.
We have made every attempt to make VDPro produce numbers that you can not only achieve, but exceed. Not all variables can be estimated like this, so weather and track conditions can make a huge difference in actual results. Altitude also plays a role in the results. VDPro is calibrated for an altitude of 900 ft. above sea level, and an atmospheric pressure of 14.7.
Things like VE (Volumetric Efficiency) and compression are calculated based upon the selections and specs that you provide to the program. Engine CFM and suggested carb sizes are generated instead of being selected. It makes more sense to us for VDPro to tell you what CFM your engine needs rather than ask what carb size it has now.
What does it do?
VDPro allows you to enter specifications about a particular engine/vehicle combination and calculates all needed information so that you can see what kind of performance to expect. VDPro shows you true compression, Effective compression (including boost), engine CFM, recommended carb (or throttle body) size, total HP, NET HP, peak torque @ RPM, 1/4 mile performance, 60 foot times, and more.
VDPro allows you to play "what if" with any of the specs for a combination, to see how it effects the outcome. It is very accurate, and handles Nitrous Oxide kits and turbo or superchargers with ease.
Turbo, supercharger, and nitrous oxide friendly
VDPro was created with forced induction and nitrous systems in mind. It fully supports these systems and is so accurate that it's sometimes scary. It's physics engine uses several models depending upon cubic inches, number of valves per cylinder, and head design in conjunction with the other engine variables to create a forced induction model for boost, volumetric efficiency, and effective compression. It also features a turbocharger selector to help you match your engine/RPM range to the right sized turbo, and an injector sizing selection that shows you what size injectors you will need.
But I'm not an engineer
You don't need to be and engineer to work with VDPro. You will need to know critical information about your engine and car, but all of those figures can be found in manuals and repair guides. You will also need your cam card if you have changed cam shafts. All of the specs are a matter of looking them up in manuals that you probably already have. VDPro also comes with a database of pre-defined engines so you can just pick the engine you already have and then make changes to match your own engine.
Even if you don't build cars
for a living, it's nice to know how a planned change on your favorite ride
will turn out. You can also do the same for your friends, or even the competition
if you can get them to brag a bit!
How does it work?
VDPro is full of complex formulas and calculations to achieve the most accurate results possible. It is not a graphics program. It won't draw cars running a 1/4 mile or do any fancy graphs or sweeping tach needles. VDPro is a no nonsense approach to personal dynamometers. It is very fast and flexible, and prints or displays all of its results on demand.
VDPro allows you to save an unlimited number of different engine/vehicle combinations, and comes with several pre-made packages. You can load and re-use these at any time and even re-save them.
You can add to the existing engines in the engine database at any time as well. VDPro is ideal for machine shops and engine builders that want to give customers a close idea of what changes are best for their customers car.
VDPro includes a calculators
section that allows you to do common conversions and some quick performance
math. It includes an RPM at MPH calculator to help you decide on that gear
ratio you have been thinking about, CC and Cubic Inch converters, as well
as basic performance calculators such as MPH in a 1/4 mile to an ET.
What do I need to know?
To use the program you need to know very little about computers. VDPro is very easy to use and understand. It has pop-up menus that you can access any time you want, and it has built-in help for commands and options.
The easy way is to select the correct engine from the included engine database, and then make any needed changes. That way you don't have to dig through books to find the correct information. We have already done the digging for you.
To enter information into VDPro you will need to know the following about your car:
Bore, Stroke, Piston to deck, Head gasket thickness, Combustion chamber CC, Piston dome or dish volume (in CC's), Valve diameters, Camshaft lift and duration, Type of lifter, Type of intake system, Nitrous system, Turbo or blower boost, Vehicle weight, Tire radius, Final gear ratio, Suspension type, Drive type, Transmission type, ECM module type, Tire width, and Tire compound.
All of those fields have defaults and many can be left as is. from all of that information, VDPro calculates the following results:
Total HP, Peak torque, Peak
torque RPM, Engine flow capacity (in CFM), Recommended carb size, Time
through 1/4 mile, Speed through 1/4 mile, RPM at the end of a 1/4 mile,
Effective compression ratio, Recommended engine redline (shift points),
NET HP, and much more.
How do I get it?
You can order VDPro directly from us, or ask your local speed shop to carry the program in stock. VDPro is the most inexpensive and complete dyno software on the planet as far as we know. It uses calculations that take traction, drag, and HP loss into account to give you performance figures that you can reproduce in the real world instead of in a lab under perfect conditions.
